ANOTHER HANGING PAMPAS DECORATION DIY

pampas grass christmas decoration.jpg

You may remember last Christmas I made a huge pampas grass hanging for an over-table display - well this year, I was working on a project for H&M Home and thought I’d make another one - a little differently this time by mixing up different dried grasses.

A few people said they were going to try and recreate it, so I thought I’d throw a quick tutorial on the blog for anyone who wants to give it a try.

MATERIALS

  • Small dry Oasis foam (I used these)

  • Variety of small dried grasses (I bought a mix from eBay - the kinds used in my hanging are reeds/phragmites, bunny tails, feather pampas and a dried sun fan palm)

  • Jewellery wire

  • Paper baubles (mine were from H&M Home)

HOW TO

  1. With the largest pieces of your dried grass and one piece of floral foam, try to create a silhouette to your hanging you like. These will stick out furthest, so create the big picture with these and then fill in the detail.

  2. I used a small dried palm through the base to create drama on one side.

  3. Build up with some smaller, softer grasses which add volume.

  4. To bulk out the hanging (some of these dried grasses can be expensive) I cut bunny tails very short and inserted them into the foam so that they were almost at the base.

  5. To add some textural interest and break up the expanse of soft grasses, I used some more structured dried pieces. These are the bleached, near-white grasses you can see spread throughout the final arrangement.

  6. Adding some paper baubles is a great way to cover up any remaining bald spots, and they’re light enough to hang on grass stems or pin in place.

  7. I wrapped jewellery wire around the centre after it was complete, but you could hang it first and add grass while it’s suspended, this will help you balance it as you go. If it’s too heavy on the front and you hang it after, it will tip forward, meaning you may need to rearrange some of the grasses to spread the weight more evenly.

I’d love to see if you have a go at making one of these! Tag me on Instagram or send me an email if you like!
