HOW I MADE THIS DIY SCALLOPED BENCH SEAT

[Fabric for this project was provided as a PR sample by Zinc Textile]

If you remember my RRR office makeover project, you might remember I made this little bench seat over in the corner of the room. This was a bit I super-rushed at the end of the project, and I’ve never loved it as a space. I tried changing it up and making it a shelf, but it ended up being a bit busy in the space overall.

But I had a bit of a brainwave to make it look a bit better as a seating area. I fancied the idea of creating a scallop design, inspired by 2LG Studio’s bed for Love Your Home. I also spotted some beaut bouclé fabric from Zinc Textile, who wanted to work with me on the project (so thanks guys!)

The fabric is called Zumirez from the Malibu collection, and the colour is Linen. It’s honestly gorgeous, and this felt like a perfect little project to add it into my home.

So how did I do it? It was actually a super simple DIY you’ll be pleased to know.

  1. I started by getting some MDF strips cut at B&Q the exact width I wanted for each panel. I wasn’t too worried about the length as I have a circular/mitre saw at home I can use for this part, but if you don’t you could ask the cutting service to do this for you too. I needed 6 altogether.

  2. Back at home, I found something round that was the right size to draw a scallop at the top of the piece of wood.

  3. I cut it with a jigsaw. If you use a thick enough fabric, any slight unevenness in your cut shouldn’t show up.

  4. Cut your fabric to size and use a staple gun to attach it onto the back of the MDF. You’ll have to work on the curved section and cut out some folds to get it to lie as flat as possible, but this will all be hidden.

  5. I used a velcro tape to attach to the walls individually - it worked well for me, but there’d definitely be a more permanent way to do it with glue if you wanted to.

  6. I already had made a base for my seat - just some thick foam and a MDF base. Upholster with your new fabric to finish it off.

Like I said, super easy, but you could use this technique for all kinds - even creating a headboard on a larger scale!
