NURSERY MAKEOVER: HOW TO DO A NEUTRAL SCHEME FOR A BABY ROOM

I’ve got to be honest, the last time I did a design for a child’s room, it was probably for myself when I was an actual child. However, my sister Shannan and her partner Jamie have just had their first baby, a little girl called Lyla, and I wanted to give her the gift of a room makeover before the little one arrived.

Fortunately, my sister loves neutrals just like me and didn’t want anything too colourful or blue or pink, so the idea was to create a neutral (and gender neutral) scheme but that still had the sense of joy and fun you want for a baby’s room.

They’d bought some basics already, including the crib and changing table, as well as a cute rocking chair found on marketplace that just needed a little upcycling . The room had been freshly plastered ad carpeted, and they’d had an internal window filled in, so we had a pretty blank slate to start with.

Here’s the breakdown of the plan I created for the room:

  • Create a wall panelling with shaker pegs on the back wall

  • A neutral colour palette using COAT paints

  • Take the door off the internal wardrobe, add shelving and a rail, as well as lighting

  • Build some baby book shelves

  • Replace the door

  • Make a cover for the radiator

I worked with COAT on the paints for this project, using their Milk No Sugar shade as an uplifting neutral for the space on the panelling and woodwork. The lovely folks at Scandiborn, Oy Oy Living and Cam Cam Copenhagen contributed some accessories to finish the scheme off too.

So what do you think? The DIYs in this room were the panelling, book shelves, radiator cover and open wardrobe, so if you want any information on those projects, or any stockist information for the room, leave me a comment below and let me know.

My sister and her fiancé were happy clients, and I love how it turned out.. Now I’m just keen to actually meet baby Lyla and see what she thinks!
